Open Door Ministries Serves Over One Million Meals

The Father’s Table Program makes a daily impact by serving three meals a day to the homeless community

HIGH POINT – Open Door Ministries of High Point has been caring for the homeless community for over 40 years though several programs. One of those programs, the Father’s Table, has reached a milestone by serving more than one million meals over the past seven years to assist the homeless and low-income community.

Open Door Ministries began the Million Meal Campaign in 2004 and recently surpassed their goal. “Counting the numbers of meals served makes us realize the important nature of our work and the reason that we are committed to providing a meal to those in need,” said Steve Key, Executive Director of Open Door Ministries.

Meals are served three times a day, six days a week at the Fathers Table, located on 400 North Centennial Street in High Point.

Kathy Edwards, Program Director of the Father’s Table, said “Open Door Ministries’ volunteers and donors have allowed us to be able to provide one million meals to those struggling in our community. We look forward to continuing our work of providing one of life’s basic necessities – food for the hungry.”

Roberta Little of High Point has seen the affects of homelessness and for eight years ate almost every meal at the Father’s table. Witnessing the generosity of the volunteers preparing and serving the food Roberta began volunteering at Open Door Ministries and began the journey to turn her life around. Roberta participated in several programs at Open Door Ministries that focus on helping people move towards self-sufficiency and she now lives in her own apartment in High Point.

The Open Door Ministries Father’s Table relies on community volunteers to donate and prepare the food. If you are interesting in volunteering or donating food and supplies please contact Kathy Edwards at 336-885-0191 ext. 29.

Volunteers open doors for thousands

Article in the High Point Enterprise written by the talented Mary Bogest highlighting the 2011 Open Door Ministries Volunteer Banquet.

It was a grand “Giving Thanks for You” evening dedicated to the supporters and volunteers of Open Door Ministries. The First Presbyterian Church hosted the dinner honoring those who exemplify the meaning of the word “volunteer” by caring for those in our community who need tender care the most. To these volunteers the word “community” is much more than its dictionary definition, “a group of interacting people living in a common location.” To High Pointers, community means family.
